The 8 essentials your AI assistant needs before you turn it on

An AI storefront assistant is only as good as the information behind it. Here are the eight things to cover first, and what good looks like for each.

Shoppers ask the same handful of questions again and again. Where do you ship? What's your return policy? Does this come in my size? How do I reach you? An AI storefront assistant can answer them whenever a shopper asks, but only if the answers exist somewhere it can read.

Chablyy's store-essentials checklist covers eight things. It marks each one as urgent, recommended or optional, so you know where to start. Here they are, roughly in order of how much they matter.

1. Your catalog

Chablyy imports your products, variants and inventory from Shopify automatically, so there's nothing to type. What you control is quality: clear titles, real descriptions and a good image on every product. We cover that in writing product descriptions an AI assistant can use.

2. Shipping policy (urgent)

This is the question shoppers ask most. Say where you ship, how long orders take to arrive, what shipping costs, when your order cut-off is, and how tracking works. Specific beats vague: "Orders placed before 2 pm ship the same day" is far more useful than "We ship quickly".

3. Returns and refunds policy (urgent)

State the return window, the condition items must be in, who pays for return shipping, how refunds are issued, and how shoppers begin the process. If some items are final sale, say which.

Give a support email, a phone number if you have one, and your support hours. When the assistant can't answer something, this is where shoppers go next.

Two or three short paragraphs on what you sell, who it's for, and what makes you different. It helps the assistant describe your store the way you would.

If you sell clothing or shoes, a size chart prevents a lot of "does this run small?" questions. Include measurements, not just letter sizes.

7. Privacy policy (optional)

Shoppers sometimes ask what you do with their data. If you have a policy, the assistant can point to it.

8. Terms of service (optional)

Likewise for questions about your terms of sale.

Fill the gaps quickly

  • Sync what already exists. If a policy is already on your Shopify store, use "Sync from website" to pull it in rather than retyping it.
  • Write for shoppers, not lawyers. Short sentences and concrete examples work best. A plain-language summary at the top of a long policy helps.
  • Test it. Type a real shopper question into "Test a shopper question" on the Knowledge Base page and read the passages it finds. If the right answer isn't there, add it.

Watch the readiness bar

The checklist shows a red, amber or green bar. Red means shoppers could get wrong or missing answers on key questions. Amber means the basics are covered but a few gaps remain. Green means your assistant is fully prepared. Aim for amber before you switch the chat on, and green soon after.
