Writing product descriptions an AI assistant can use

Chablyy checks your catalog for descriptions, materials and care, and images. Here's what each check looks for and how to fix the gaps quickly.

Shoppers ask product questions that sound simple. What's it made of? How do I wash it? Does it fit a laptop? What's in the box? An AI assistant can answer only what's written down. If the material isn't in your product description, it shouldn't guess, and neither should you want it to.

Chablyy's Knowledge Base runs three checks on your catalog, and shows you exactly which products need attention.

The three checks

Descriptions. Does each product have a real description? A title alone gives the assistant very little to work with.

Materials and care (for apparel). Shoppers ask about fabric and washing more than almost anything else on clothing. This check flags apparel products where that information is missing.

Images. Does each product have images? Shoppers often need to see the product to ask a good question, and the assistant shows products as cards with their image.

For each check, Chablyy lists the actual products, with a link to Open in Shopify so you can fix them straight away. If a product doesn't need the check, choose Ignore.

What to write

You don't need long copy. Facts the assistant can quote are worth more than adjectives.

  • Materials and construction. "100% organic cotton canvas, cotton webbing handles."
  • Size and fit. Real dimensions, and how it fits. Link to your size chart for clothing.
  • Care. "Machine wash cold, line dry."
  • What's included. Especially for sets and bundles.
  • Compatibility. "Fits laptops up to 15 inches."

Keep variant names consistent

Shoppers ask about variants by name: "Is the tote available in charcoal?" Use the same names everywhere, and avoid stuffing several descriptions into one option name. "Charcoal" works better than "Dark grey / charcoal / graphite".

Share the right extra fields

If you keep useful details in product metafields, such as care instructions or dimensions, you can choose which ones the assistant is allowed to see. By default it sees none, so nothing is shared until you select it in Settings, then Product meta fields.

Test with a real question

After a round of fixes, open Knowledge Base, go to the Advanced tab, and use Ask your knowledge to test a shopper question, such as "Can I machine wash the linen notebook cover?". You'll see which passages match, and how closely. If the answer isn't there, you know what to add.
